SAGE Trail Alliance Bike Etiquette

Bike access on our trails depends on responsible use of these shared resources and compliance with regional customs. Please help keep trails open for your fellow riders by respecting these guidelines.

  • Bikers must wear bells when riding our local trails! Bells can be found at our local bike shops and at popular trailheads in bell boxes or on bell boards.
  • All trails are multi-use unless designated. Yield to other users and uphill traffic, slow down and say hi when passing! Use extra caution on blind turns or exposed sections.
  • Most of our trails are old, narrow, and steep with histories spanning centuries or millennia. Please keep this in mind when recreating and do your part to help maintain their integrity for years to come.

Winter

This is the best time to take advantage of backcountry riding. While precipitation generally makes our trails better, some take a long time to dry and should be avoided for a few days.

Always good to go: Romero, Tequepis, West Fork,

Quick to dry after rain: Cold Springs, Tunnel

Avoid after rain: Camuesa and other Santa Ynez Rec Area trails, Elings, Jesusita, Trek Trails Rancho Alegre.

Summer

Staying near the coast is the best bet when things are really toasty. Elings Park is always a wonderful resource, but especially now.

Back country: Temperatures sit in the 90s and regularly hit triple digits, best to limit visits to early morning only.

Front country: Higher elevations = higher temps. Bring plenty of water and sun protection and start early!

For those new to town or just visiting, here’s a list of routes and suggestions organized from easiest to more challenging.

Closure Updates

Please check official trail status, as many National Forest trails remain closed following storm damage from winter storms of 2023.

Included are: Upper Old Romero Road, North Tunnel, Matias Potrero, Matias Connector, Arroyo Burro and Upper Santa Cruz. Please see SB Ranger District Order for complete information. Restoration and reopening of these trails is pending environmental review, we hope to be rebuilding soon.
