About SAGE:
Founded in 1988, SAGE Trail Alliance is an official non-profit 501(c)(3) partner of the Los Padres National Forest. Our mission is to work with local, state and federal partners to restore and maintain trails, provide equitable access to public lands, and protect natural environments. With the help of our volunteers and professional trail crew, we dedicate thousands of hours each year to the restoration and maintenance of trails across the Los Padres National Forest in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties.
Hours and Rate:
Up to 40 hours/week, but may vary depending on weather and project needs. Some weekend days may be required, though not typical, and are available if desired. Compensation starts at $22/hour with potential for increase after probationary period.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
Use hand and power tools to maintain trail tread and corridors, including but not limited to: clearing blow downs, brushing trail corridors, and maintaining sustainable drainage structures.
Use and maintain a variety of tools including Pulaski, McLeod, rock bars, hand saws, ax, picks, shovel, chainsaw, crosscut, etc.
Use hand and power tools to maintain and build trails with associated materials, restore impacted areas, and replace signage as needed.
Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and proper safety procedures at all times.
Interact with and, at times, educate fellow trail users on trail maintenance and cleanup.
Work alongside and assist SAGE volunteers in a fun, safe and educational manner.
Working Conditions:
Heavy physical effort is required in bending, lifting, applying leverage, and reaching. Frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
Must be able to access project sites via trails covering steep and technical terrain where non-ideal conditions may be present.
Carry in/out all tools, supplies, and daily food and water, often via mountain bike. Due to the remote locations serviced by SAGE, high level bike handling skills are a big plus, though not required.
Qualifications:
18 or older
Valid license and personal transportation preferred.
General enthusiasm for the outdoors.
Positive attitude! Long days of taxing work are much harder if you’re not having fun.
Candidate should be comfortable riding/hiking remote trails in a safe and controlled manner while wearing a loaded backpack
Trail Work experience preferred but not required
